GRADES: 9, 10, 11, and 12

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

In level one, students develop the necessary skills for functional oral and written communication by using the language in meaningful contexts. They will examine the historical background, educational system, arts and customs of Chinese culture as well as the influence of Chinese culture in the United States.

In level 2, students continue to develop proficiency in all four language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on the ability to communicate orally. They have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters to interpret the content of simple readings. The study of Chinese history and culture is integrated into the language development process. (Prerequisite: level 1 or equivalency test.)

In level 3, students continue to develop proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on understanding and responding to statement and conversations conducted in Chinese. They have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters to interpret the content of assigned readings dealing with abstract concepts. Cultural topics include Chinese art, music, and literature and its influence on American culture. (Prerequisite: level 2 or equivalency test.)

In level 4, students continue to develop language proficiency in all four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on functional communication. They are able to interpret text and write in Chinese on a wide variety of topics. Cultural topics include Chinese political and social systems. (Prerequisite: level 3 or equivalency test.)

In AP Chinese, students study the use of language for active communication. Emphasis is placed on the development of the three modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive and presentational). The course is structured around six overarching themes: Beauty, and Aesthetics, Contemporary Life, Families and Communities, Global Challenges, Personal and Public Identities, and Science and Technology. Students use language structures in context and use them to convey meaning. The course promotes fluency and accuracy to facilitate the study of language and culture. Students who complete this course are encouraged to take the associated Advanced Placement examination and may earn college credit if a qualifying score is achieved. (Prerequisite: level 4 or equivalency test.)
